The battle between bikes and cars is intensifying in DC, where more and more bike lanes are being set up.

While many neighbors are in favor of cycle paths along a 17e NW Street near Dupont Circle, others are screaming scandal over the process and outcome, which has been confusing as delivery drivers compete with cars for sidewalk space and cyclists compete with delivery trucks and pedestrians.

“We are concerned about the elderly with walkers; we are concerned about toddlers tied with rope on their way to daycare, ”said Nick DelleDonne, president of the Dupont East Civic Action Association.

“If you create confusion, you are going to put them at risk,” he said.

Acting Director of Transportation Everett Lott is sensitive to the concerns of neighbors.

“The 17th Street Protected Bike Lane project is a vital link for cyclists moving through the downtown area,” Lott said in a written statement. “We are asking the community to support us as we try to accommodate the restaurants and the active construction which will last a few more weeks. It is a busy street with a lot of competing curbside demands. “

“On 17th Street, DDOT has worked for years with the Neighborhood Commission as part of a public process to determine the best design for a safer street,” the Washington Area Bicyclist Association said in a statement. “Through this process, all but one ANC 2B commissioners voted in favor of the plan currently installed on 17th Street, which adds safe options for biking, improves walking safety and still preserves the fantastic streets. that have helped 17th Street businesses to float. “

The district has about 100 miles of biking trails and plans to add 20 more miles over the next two years.

The Glover Park neighborhood in the upper northwest is slated for new cycle paths along Tunlaw Road, 37e Street and avenue in New Mexico.

The plan would eliminate up to 182 residential parking spaces along these roads.

“I think everyone in the neighborhood is pro safety and pro cycling, but I think the concern is that the loss of 75 percent of parking in the neighborhood is going to lead to a less safe environment, not an environment safer, ”owner Chris Finnegan mentioned.

“There will be tradeoffs that we will have to make as a community,” Lott said in his statement. “We are committed to presenting options for discussion and engagement with residents on what will work best for this community. “

“At Glover Park, we’ve also been in a public discussion about this project for a few years,” the Washington Area Bicyclist Association statement said. “One of the three NCAs (3D) has already voted in favor of protected cycle lanes for Tunlaw Road, as increasing sustainable transportation options is an important part of making DC more affordable, accessible and inclusive. This planning process is far from over, and now is a great opportunity to get involved in making sure the project is a win-win for everyone who travels down this street.

The DC Department of Transportation will not begin installing these cycle lanes until next year.
